Change Information on Vehicle Registration in Florida
Vehicle registration and title transactions in Florida are administered by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) through the county tax collector offices and licensed license plate agencies that act as the department's authorized agents. Registration information can be updated online through the MyDMV Portal, by mail, or in person at a local tax collector or license plate agency office. The procedure that applies depends on the record being changed and the reason for the change.
Florida Vehicle Registration Changes that Commonly Require Action
Registration and title records should be reviewed whenever the information associated with a vehicle changes. Common situations that require action include:
- A change of residential or mailing address, which must be reported to the department within 30 days.
- A legal name change, which must be updated on the driver's license or identification card and on the title and registration records within 30 days, in person at a local office.
- Incorrect information appearing on a registration certificate or a certificate of title.
- The purchase or transfer of a vehicle, which requires application for a certificate of title, registration, and license plate transfer within 30 days.
- Taking up residence in Florida with a vehicle previously registered in another state, which requires titling and registration through the local county tax collector.
- The transfer of a license plate to a newly acquired vehicle is handled together with the new registration at a tax collector or license plate agency.
Where to File a Florida Vehicle Registration Change
Florida administers vehicle registration and titling at the state level through the department's motor vehicle services, with day-to-day transactions processed by the county tax collector offices in each of Florida's 67 counties and by licensed license plate agencies. Registration renewals, address changes, license plate transfers, and title applications are accepted at these local offices, and the department's locations page provides the directory of tax collector offices and license plate agents. Many transactions can also be completed online through the department's MyDMV Portal at mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov.
Title matters are handled through the same offices. Under Florida law, an application for a certificate of title may be made to the department or its authorized agent, and in practice, it is submitted to the county tax collector's office, which issues the title and registration together. Title applications must be accompanied by the previously issued certificate of title duly assigned to the new owner, along with a proper bill of sale or other evidence of ownership.
Prior to the issuance of a registration, the owner must provide proof that personal injury protection and property damage liability coverage have been purchased. The issuing agent is required by statute to refuse to issue the registration if such proof is not presented.
Florida Address Changes on Vehicle Registration
An address change on the vehicle registration record must be reported to the department within 30 days, and the notification must include the registration license plate number, the vehicle identification number or title certificate number, the year and make of the vehicle, and the owner's full name. An address update can be submitted online, by visiting the name and address changes page on the department's website or in person at a county tax collector or license plate agency office.
The department requires that the new address be recorded on both the driver's license or identification card record and the title and registration records. Address changes may be completed online through the MyDMV Portal; name changes, by contrast, must be completed in person at a local office.
Florida Name Changes and Title-Linked Corrections
A legal name change affects both the driver's license or identification card record and the title and registration records, and it must be reported within 30 days of the change. Name changes must be completed in person at a tax collector's office or license plate agency, where the owner presents original or certified documentation of the change.
Because Florida law requires the certificate of title and the title application to contain the applicant's full legal name, a name change must also be recorded on the title. The owner applies for a corrected certificate of title through the county tax collector, presenting the certificate of title along with supporting name-change documentation, and the registration record is updated in the same transaction.
Correcting Incorrect Information on a Florida Registration Record
The correction procedure depends on the record that contains the error. Incorrect information on a registration certificate is corrected by obtaining a replacement registration certificate through a county tax collector or license plate agency or through the department's online renewal and replacement services.
Incorrect information on a title record is corrected by applying for a corrected certificate of title. Under Florida law, the application for a certificate of title, a corrected certificate, or an assignment must be filed within 30 days, and the department prescribes the forms used for these applications. The Application for Certificate of Motor Vehicle Title (Form HSMV 82040) is submitted to the local tax collector's office, which also issues registration for the vehicle. When a certificate of title has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, the owner submits the Application for Duplicate or Lost in Transit / Reassignment (Form HSMV 82101) to obtain a duplicate title.
Florida Deadlines for Vehicle Registration Changes
- Address changes must be reported to the department within 30 days of the change.
- Name changes must be reported within 30 days of the change and completed in person at a local office.
- Title applications for a purchased or transferred vehicle, including applications for a corrected certificate or an assignment, must be filed within 30 days after delivery of the vehicle or consummation of the sale. An applicant must pay a $20 fee, in addition to all other fees and penalties, for failing to file within this period.
- New residents must obtain a Florida driver license within 30 days of establishing residency, as set out in the department's new resident information, and vehicles brought into the state must be titled and registered with the local county tax collector within 10 days of establishing residency.
- Registration renewal is due under section 320.07 of the Florida Statutes. Registration for a natural person expires at midnight on the owner's birthday, and a vehicle may not be operated with an expired registration. Operation with a registration expired for 6 months or less is a noncriminal traffic infraction; expiration beyond 6 months is subject to the penalty provisions of chapter 318 for a first offense and to prosecution as a second-degree misdemeanor for a second or subsequent offense.
- Delinquent renewal fees apply where the registration is not renewed before the end of the renewal month, beginning on the 11th calendar day of the month following the renewal period. The delinquent fee ranges from a flat $5 when the license tax is $25 or less to a flat $250 when the license tax exceeds $600, with intermediate amounts of $10, $15, $50, and $100 for the remaining tax brackets.
- Insurance must be maintained for the entire registration period. The department suspends the registration upon receiving notice from the insurer that the required personal injury protection or property damage liability coverage has been canceled.
